ROOT VEGETABLES
music, lyrics, book by Marc Jablonski
Three friends hit rock bottom on a Catskills farm and find utopia growing beneath. A musical about inheritance, collective survival, and asking for help.
Root Vegetables is a dark comedy folk-rock musical set across one growing season. Hedy, an agricultural engineer, buys a dilapidated farm near the ruins of a Borscht Belt resort, determined to build an invention that can automate farming. She convinces her two friends Psy and Caz to join her. But the invention keeps failing, Caz abandons the farm for the wilderness, and Psy ends up on the floor in withdrawal. At their lowest point, the ghost of Hedy’s great-great-grandfather Leib, a Jewish immigrant who built a life in these same mountains a century earlier, arrives with one piece of advice: stop trying to build a future alone.
